The property and land was designated in 2011 by the state of Texas as a Texas Historical Site. The property was part of the first land grant given by King Phillip II of Spain and became quickly recognized as a perfect spot to breed cattle from Spain due to the abundance of tall grasses and unrestricted open space. After over 100 years the cattle population grew and spread further north and eventually evolved into a new, larger, leaner breed known today as the world famous “Texas Longhorn”. The land has played an important role in the establishment of the proud cattle ranching heritage of Texas and the historical birthplace of the iconic Texas Longhorn.
