About I-39 Corridor/Winnebago County
Located in the North Central region of Illinois and 90 miles northwest of Chicago, the Interstate 39/Winnebago County area contains Rockford, the state’s fifth-largest city. In addition to supporting an international airport, the area also offers excellent highway access to interstates 90 and 39 and Route 20.
The Rock River cuts through this area’s core, providing nearby residents, visitors, and companies with river view vistas along its route. At least six national parks are contained within the I-39/Winnebago County area, including the Klehm Arboretum & Botanical Garden and the Levi and Esther Fuller Memorial Forest Preserve.
Local colleges and employers provide a stable consumer base for area retailers. Rock Valley Junior College and Rasmussen University have roughly 5,800 and 1,000 students enrolled each year at their respective campuses. Sizable area employers in Rockford include the 3,000 people who work at hardware retailer Lowe’s distribution center, the 1,200 employees who work out of the flex space leased by biomedical manufacturer PCI Pharma Services, the 1,200 employees who work for aerospace manufacturer Woodward, and the 500 folks who work for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Illinois. Correspondingly, the largest employer-industry cohort is manufacturing (23%), followed by healthcare (15%), and retail trade (12%).
