Eddington is a rural town located on the southeastern side of the Penobscot River in Penobscot County Maine. Eddington is just 9.2 miles from Bangor which is home to the Bangor International Airport and Bangor Air National Guard, the 5,800 seat - Cross Insurance Center, the Hollywood Casino and Hotel, and is known as a regional shopping destination. Eddington has been known as the area where Route 9 and Route 46 intersect which leads directly to Canada and includes a historic area which includes the Eddington Community Church, Comins Hall, and historic homes. The town was founded by and named after Jonathan Eddy, a militia captain in the French and Indian War, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War, and the first magistrate in the area. Eddy and most of the town’s other original settlers migrated to the town from Nova Scotia, where they had supported the rebel cause against the majority British Loyalist population. Eddington is home to several bodies of water and recreational areas. The Penobscot River borders the western side of the town and recently was reopened to salmon fishing. Chemo Pond is the largest body of water in Eddington and is a busy place during the summer months. The Penobscot Experimental Forest, Davis Pond, and Boy Scout Camp Roosevelt are also popular destinations which keep tourists flocking to the area for long portions of the year. Eddington is located in Penobscot County which is home to the largest metropolitan area north of Portland. It boasts the scenic beauty of its countryside with the urban amenities of county seat, Bangor. Bangor is the largest market town, distribution center, transportation hub and media center in a five-county area. Bangor plays host to a number of festivals and events having a wide ranges of venues, restaurants and shopping attractions. Museums include The University of Maine Museum of Art, Maine Discovery Museum, The Cole Land Transportation Museum, The Bangor Symphony Orchestra, The Penobscot Theatre Company and The Collins Center for the Arts. The Cross Insurance Center is the home of half of University of Maine Basketball home games. The center is a 5,800 seat multi purpose center that can hold up to 8,500 people for concerts and is directly across from the Hollywood Casino Bangor and Bangor harness racing track.
