Hampton Roads is known for its large military presence, ice-free harbor, shipyards, coal piers, and miles of waterfront property and beaches, all of which contribute to the diversity and stability of the region’s economy. Hampton Roads has become known as the “world’s greatest natural harbor”. The port is located only 18 miles (29 km) from open ocean on one of the world’s deepest, natural ice-free harbors. Hampton Roads is home to four Fortune 500 companies. Representing the food industry, transportation, retail and shipbuilding, these four companies are located in Smithfield, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Newport News. The companies are Smithfield Foods, Norfolk Southern, Dollar Tree and, Huntington Ingalls Industries.
