The Spire Building is located at 230 Center Street in St. Paul Square, named for the former St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church, which was constructed during the 1880s in the Gothic Revival style. Its congregation had been established in 1866 by the African-American community. The church conducted services until 1922 when a new church was built nearby.
