The deli was originally founded in 1920 by Sam Weintraub at 113 Water Street, but in 1940, it was moved to its current location at 126 Water Street. It's been in the neighborhood for 98 years! It all started about 15 years ago with a dream of reopening the historic Blackstone Canal in a effort to recreate a neighborhood that had once flourished with eastern European immigrants, but had since become a shadow of its former self. The creation of interstate 290 cut off the once easy walking access to thousands of families, and businesses slowly started to close. Although the Canal has yet to come to the neighborhood, The Canal District is once again flourishing with small businesses. The triangle shape of the neighborhood, outlined by interstate 290, the railroad tracks and Union Station (train station to Boston), offer people the ability to park once, and walk to multiple businesses in the neighborhood. The success of the neighborhood has helped interest developers in making real estate investments in the neighborhood.
