Bluefield is a city in the scenic mountains of Southern West Virginia just on the other side of the border from Virginia. The city, whose name is derived from the blue chicory flowers that color the landscape in the summer, resides in Mercer County and is the core city of the Bluefield WV-VA Micropolitan Area, which has a population of 109,618. Bluefield is a common stop for tourists traveling north to one of West Virginia’s many ski resorts and is only 35 miles south of the nearest one – Winterplace Ski Resort. Bluefield is known as “Nature’s Air Conditioned City” for the hot summer days but refreshingly cool nights. Bluefield is home to the Toronto Blue Jay’s farm team, the Bluefield Blue Jays. The team plays at Bowen Field, which has produced famous players including Cal Ripken Jr., Boog Powell, and Eddie Murray. The city is host to many events and festivals including Fourth of July fireworks, the Beaver 8K run, the Bluefield Coal Show, and the Holiday of Lights. Bluefield has a unique, welcoming tradition dating back to 1939; when the temperature surpasses 90 degrees, the town hall offers free lemonade on its steps.
