• Allegany County, home to Cumberland, MD, is a regional transportation hub. It is crossed by Interstate 68 and the main rail lines of CSX Transportation, providing excellent access to major markets in the East and Midwest. • The area is located within easy driving distance of three major metropolitan areas – Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh. • The Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) facility is home to one of the most diverse development and manufacturing facilities in the Department of Defense. The plant currently employs 1,100 people and was previously operated by Orbital ATK, who was acquired in 2018 by defense juggernaut Northrop Grumman. • Northrop Grumman has announced they intend to create an additional 500 jobs at the ABL over a five-year period. There has been heavy investment in the lab where they build rocket motors, warheads, and fuses in anticipation of a surge in demand from Army programs that are ramping up. With demand poised to increase for rocket motors for a variety of applications beyond defense and ABL’s strategic importance to Northrop, employment prospects in the area are strong. • The Cumberland metro area is home to a population of over 100,000 and more than 45% of local residents live in rural and non-incorporated areas.
