Day trips are possible from Montrose to dozens of attractions in western Colorado, making the city an excellent base for an extended trip. The Black Canyon is just east of town, Grand Mesa and the White River National Forest are to the north, Telluride and the San Juan Mountains are a short distance south, and the Uncompahgre Plateau lies to the west. Montrose is 60 miles southeast of Grand Junction, and about 260 miles southwest of Denver.
