Unique, historic former dairy building known as the Abbotts Alderney Dairies Building. Built in 1910, this unique building is situated on the corner of McKean Street and Colorado Street, between 17th and 18th Streets in hot Newbold, a satellite neighborhood of Point Breeze, close both to Broad Street and only eleven minutes from Center City by car.
This area is easily accessible on foot, by the Broad Street Subway three blocks away, and by two bus lines; one line travels north to Center City on 16th Street, with the southbound line on 19th Street.
The Abbotts Alderney Dairies Building was a working dairy for decades, beginning at the turn of the century. The rear building, which is currently for lease, was used for stables for the horses that pulled the milk delivery wagons to homes in South Philadelphia until Abbotts transitioned to motor vehicles.
The Abbotts Alderney Dairies building is a beautiful, stately Flemish brick building with neoclassical architectural details and solid granite wainscoting. This graceful neoclassical building underwent a major renovation in 2015 where a sprinkler system was added, along with all new mechanicals and windows. The front facade enjoys LED lighting enhancing details such as limestone lintels, quoins and dentil molding, as well as lighting the original, carved limestone building signage.
The rear building, totaling 23,000 square foot on two floors has 12,000 square feet of space on the first floor. Two overhead garage doors can accommodate 60' tractor-trailer deliveries. The rear building is fully insulated, has gas-fired radiant heating and both single-phase and three-phase electrical panels. Currently a high-end custom cabinet shop and mill shop, there is a ventilated, explosion-proof paint mixing room and a double-wide downdraft paint booth. The building is zoned I-2 industrial which most notably supports a brewery by-right. Since the rear building was used as stables for the horses that pulled Abbotts' milk delivery wagons, there are unique remaining original details such as huge sliding industrial barn doors, water troughs (now filled in) and exposed brick. The private, quaint landscaped cobblestone courtyard is the perfect venue for a beer garden and can support visits by food trucks to complement the beer garden scene. Formerly, Colorado Street, the courtyard was annexed to Abbotts Dairies in 1946, when Abbotts' actually purchased a portion of Colorado Street.
