About 21 Main St , Van Buren, ME 04785
Van Buren is located on the Saint John River in Aroostook County, Maine, directly across from Saint-Leonard, New Brunswick, Canada. Van Buren is connected to Saint-Leonard, New Brunswick via the Saint Leonard-Van Buren Bridge. As of the most recent census, the town had a population of 2,171. The town is named after U.S. President Martin Van Buren. Links between Van Buren and Quebec and New Brunswick are strong due to the 76.6% of Van Buren residents who are habitual French speakers. Aroostook County is located in Maine along the Canada-U.S. border. As of the most recent census, the population was 71,870. Known locally in Maine as “The County,” it is the largest American county by land area east of the Rocky Mountains (St. Louis County, Minnesota is larger by total area) and the largest county by area in Maine, as well as in New England. As Maine’s northernmost county, its northernmost village, Estcourt Station, is therefore also the northernmost community in New England and in the contiguous United States east of the Great Lakes. The County is known for its potato crops, as well as its Acadian culture. In the Saint John Valley in the northern part of the county, which borders Madawaska County, New Brunswick, many of the residents are bilingual in English and Acadian French. Elsewhere in Maine, New England French is the predominant form of French spoken (apart from standard French).
