Hiwassee College operated as a private four-year, residential, liberal arts college, until the end of the Spring 2019 semester. It was founded in 1849 and affiliated with the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. The sweeping 290 acre campus lies 25 miles west of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is developed with 15 primary structures. Some facility highlights include auditorium with seating for 781, 3 dormitories (1 was in process of renovation), gymnasium with collegiate sized basketball court and seating capacity in excess of 2,000, pool, baseball field and softball field, 12,700 SF church building with cathedral-like sanctuary and separate chapel, student center with cafeteria, full commercial kitchen and adjoining grill, dental center (under lease), equestrian center with 2 barns, 2 arenas, 12 paddocks and over 50 acres fenced. There are numerous use possibilities for this East Tennessee school. Most of the structures were built in the 1960's. In addition to the 204,517 SF of buildings that were in use at the time the school closed, 2 other structures (a dormitory and the library) had been gutted for renovation, which contain 31,863 SF.
