The oldest major shopping locale in the Bronx is The Hub. From the beginning of the 1900's to the 1930's, the number of Bronx residents increased from 200,000 to over 1,250,000. Residents throughout the borough shopped in department stores and boutiques at 149th Street and 3rd Avenue, an area that came to be known in this time as "the Hub". In the 1930s the Hub had movie palaces and vaudeville theaters. These included the Bronx Opera House, which today operates as a boutique hotel, and the former Jackson Theatre. Now, after basically 100 years, The Hub is regaining its crown and its well deserve position back, as the effective center for business, residential and institutional activity. And at the center of all will be 2970 Third Avenue. Adjacent to La Central (a new mixed-use development with 992 residential units), within walking distance of Lincoln Memorial Hospital (a 362-bed “Trauma One” hospital), Boricua College and Hostos Community College (CUNY) and the Department of Finance Bronx Business Center, “The Hub” is where transportation, public services, financial institutions, local and nationally recognized franchises converge.
