Greensboro is part of the Piedmont Triad, a region in North Carolina encompassing the Greensboro-High Point and Winston-Salem metropolitan areas. Historically, the metro’s local economy was centered around textile, tobacco, and furniture manufacturing, but the area has become the center of a wide variety of industries in recent decades. The region’s robust collective of colleges and universities offers a larger-than-average talent pool for a diverse set of employers. However, trade, transportation, and manufacturing continue to make up a large portion of the Greensboro region’s workforce.
The region northwest of the city’s core is a mostly suburban area with access to important regional thoroughfares including Interstate 840.
