The Tampa-St. Petersburg metro contains nearly 2.9 million residents. Tampa is the largest city with a population of 353,600 and is the Hillsborough County seat. St. Petersburg and Brandon are the next most populous cities. Higher-density redevelopment projects will spur urban population growth in the next five years. The metro economy is expanding, with gross metropolitan product (GMP) expected to grow by 4.6 percent this year. Retail sales are expected to expand 6.2 percent this year compared with the U.S. level of 5.4 percent. Ongoing job gains in the metro through 2020 bode well for the region' s economy. Bioscience and other high-tech industries are expanding, due in part to research at the metro' s nearly 80 institutions of higher learning. Growth in these industries further bolsters the region' s reputation as a high-tech corridor, often referred to as Technology Bay.
