About West Loop
The West Loop contains a gorgeous mix of the newest office product on the leasing market and the stalwarts of a bygone era. Hired architects gracefully blended these properties with the existing skyline to a magnificent effect. The low-hung, 1929-built Civic Opera House hugs the Chicago River, as does the 2020-built Bank of America Tower just north of it. The Chicago River is reflected dramatically in the spherical base of the 2016-built tower at 444 W. Lake, where the Chicago River bends north and south. Just south of this stands 150 N. Riverside, an architectural wonder built in 2017. Caissons were drilled more than 110 feet below grade, and the largest and longest hot-rolled steel beams used in the U.S. which allowed the building’s width to splay from 39 square feet at its base to 120 square feet from the sixth floor up. Down the river by only a handful of blocks is the commanding Willis Tower, built in 1973. Once the tallest building in the world, the former Sears Tower still commands the skyline with its 110 stories.
