About Wilmington
Wilmington’s industrial market draws its strength from the Port of Wilmington, a full-service, deep-water port that ranks number one in North America for imports of fresh fruits and juice concentrates, with the largest dock-side cold storage facility on the continent.
Serviced by Interstate 95, U.S. Route 202, and the Delaware Memorial Bridge (which feeds directly into the New Jersey Turnpike), goods can be transported from here to Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington, D.C. in under two hours.
Distributors and business services firms including Intercontinental Services of Delaware, Superior Distribution, and Iron Mountain maintain large industrial facilities here. Specialty chemical manufacturers including Prince Minerals and Delchem also account for a large share of industrial activity, along with building materials supply firms including Midsouth Building Supply, R.C. Fabricators, and Steel Suppliers Erectors.
Gulftainer, a UAE-based port operator that took ownership of the Port of Wilmington in 2018, plans to more than quadruple the port’s container volume via a $600 million investment that expands its existing port terminals. This could be a boon for economic activity in the region and allow the port to diversify well beyond refrigerated cargo, which currently represents about 80% of its business.
