About the Property
City of Tolleson spent over $10M on Downtown Makeover! The entire district has been rezoned as CORE — commercial office retail entertainment —zoning with more permissive requirements for signage and to help stimulate private investment. Besides the art, the downtown has been made appealing with piped-in music, free Wi-Fi and the Central Plaza, a shaded gathering spot and venue for concerts. The whole area is lit; in fact, it is named Paseo de Luces, or Path of Light. Four vending kiosks have been created and are to be rented to local entrepreneurs. A façade improvement program is also in the works, and the city is to help existing businesses make their storefronts more attractive. In September, the city banned "urban camping," or people sleeping and living on the streets, in advance of the project being finished. In the longer term, the city expects a vibrant business core to develop. "The future of downtown of Tolleson is to take everything that they have done now and try and transform it into economic development opportunities. They are hoping that once they have this downtown fully operational, they'll be able to attract businesses to come in and be a part of it."
