Bonney (later known as “Billy the Kid”) before he moved on to the Lincoln County area. Many other notable, law-abiding, historical figures made Silver City their home as well. Bounded by the Continental Divide on the west, the Pinos Altos mountain range to the north, the Burro Mountains to the southwest and set at almost 6,000 ft elevation we experience mild southwest summers and comfortable winters. The nearby Gila Wilderness, founded in 1899 as the first National Forest, provides endless hiking and outdoor adventures. Travel just minutes from town and you’re in a vast wilderness where it seems you’re all alone. Situated at almost 6,000 feet we have notably cooler summers than the lower level surrounding areas. The average temperature is 54 degrees. High temperatures in June can reach nearly 100 degrees, but more normally set between high 80’s and low 90’s. July and August bring the monsoon season and we cool off daily. Fall into winter is mild with most daytime temps in the 60’s and lows overnight in the ’40s. December and January can be cooler and temps drop to daytime ’40s with below freezing at night. We typically experience snow during these months. Daily sunshine tends to melt most of the snow. Clear blue skies are typical as we average 300 days per year of sunshine.
