Competition
This is the only exclusively fair trade focused shop in New Jersey. The only other semi-local fair trade "competitors" are Ten Thousand Villages (a franchise) that has retail space in Philadelphia and Media, Pennsylvania. Most products are unique because they are sourced via personal relationships that have been established by the shop owner through years of travel, trial/error, research. Products are not on Amazon, none of it is "made in China". Customers know they are getting unique items and supporting women/family artisans through fair trade.
Growth & Expansion
Currently the business does minimal sales online. This is an area of expansion. The business is closed on Sundays in Jan/Feb/March as well as Mondays throughout the year. The shop could be opened during these days (and increase daily open hours) to increase sales. There is a potential to sell products at a wide variety of relevant markets and festivals throughout the year that the owner could also take advantage of.
Support & Training
This is an owner-run business as of now, though it could be run by a shop manager (approx 36 hrs/week). One month of transitional training and a transition "event" to introduce new owner to customer base and establish good will from the community is included. Transitional training will include one week of in-person support and one month of phone access.
