The Great Harvest Bread Company, Annapolis retail bakery is one of the oldest Great Harvest locations in the Mid-Atlantic US. It was established in 2000 in an ideal location in the upscale neighborhood of West Annapolis, and is now part of a small, vibrant commercial district of boutique shops and dining establishments. The bakery has a stable, loyal customer base and has a strong track record of increasing sales and profitability.
Beyond the immediate West Annapolis neighborhood, the bakery is well located to serve the broader Annapolis, MD community. We are just 2 blocks from the US Naval Academy and Navy, Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. And less than a half mile from the State Capital and the historic, colonial era downtown Annapolis waterfront district. The franchise territory, with a radius of 10 miles centered on the current location, encompasses major residential and commercial areas including Severna Park on the MD2 corridor between Annapolis and Baltimore, as well as the Kent Island Community across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
The current owners acquired the bakery from the previous, retiring owners in August 2021. Since then, we’ve focused on infrastructure improvements and equipment upgrades. In the kitchen area we’ve made improvements to flooring tile and wall racking. Equipment improvements included purchasing a new second mixer (30 qt) to supplement the 140 qt Hobart mixer, which was rebuilt/serviced. Also, a complete mechanical rebuild of the 10 rack, rotating oven. We’ve also invested heavily in storage racking and food-grade shelving units throughout the kitchen and pantry to maximize storage and efficiency in compact spaces.
On the product side, we’ve added several flavor varieties of muffins, scones and cookies, including expanding Gluten-Less options made each Wednesday. We’ve also refreshed resale offerings with several local, ESG conscious vendors, including a well established, premium local coffee brand (Chesapeake Bay Coffee Roasters).
This franchise territory has significant, untapped growth opportunities, including prime locations for adding 1 or more bakery café outlets (i.e. Severna Park) that could be fully supported for breads by the existing retail bakery kitchen/oven capacity with no additional investment.
There is an immediate opportunity to leverage existing marketing programs that have not been fully implemented such as the Great Harvest Rewards program and on-line ordering. A modest investment in remodeling the customer service area and storefront would also have an immediate, positive impact. Numerous farmer’s markets in the area also present growth potential.
