Gary Bechtel is a lifelong resident of Macon-Bibb County. Gary is the District 1 commissioner in the new consolidated Macon-Bibb County government having been elected with 82% of the vote in September of 2013. Currently, Gary serves as a Chairman of the Operations and Finance Committee as well as a member of Facilities and Engineering committee of the Macon Bibb County Commission. Previously Gary served on the Bibb County Commission having been elected in 2012. Prior to being elected to the Bibb County Commission, Gary served for 12 years on the Bibb County Board of Education.
Gary is a 1989 graduate of Leadership Macon. In addition to his service on the commission, Gary currently serves on the Macon Economic Development Commission, the industry recruiting arm of the Macon Chamber of Commerce. Gary started his career in banking as a wholesale account executive for Southstar Funding in 2002. In 2006, he was named Vice President for mortgage operations at Atlantic Southern Bank. In 2010 he was named an asset manager in Atlantic Southern Bank special asset division. Upon the closing of Atlantic Southern Bank by the FDIC he was hired by Certus Bank as an Asset Manager in the Credit Risk department. Gary was responsible for a 40 million dollar portfolio of criticized assets and was responsible for working out complicated credits. In June of 2013 he was hired by Guaranty Financial Incorporated as Vice President. Guaranty Financial is a commercial mortgage brokerage firm with offices in Columbus, Macon, Georgia and Orlando, Florida, which has been in business for 22 years and financed over 1 billion dollars in commercial projects all over the southeast.
Gary is married to former Laura Meadows of Macon, who is a realtor with Sheridan Solomon and Associates. Gary and Laura have two children, a daughter, Tarver, 22, who is a senior at Georgia College and State University and Sam, 18, who is a senior at Howard High School. Gary and Laura are members of First Presbyterian Church in Macon. A 1984 graduate of Georgia College and State University.
