Bio
John Van Coutren has lived in Eastern North Carolina for 33 years. While attending East Carolina University, he launched Greenville’s first fine dining restaurant in 1991. As his career developed, he became an entrepreneur in the hospitality businesses in Beaufort, Pitt, Carteret, and Wake counties. His growing passion for the hospitality industry led him to pursue opportunities to become an executive and partner of a vertical hospitality development and management company. The past three decades of integration with community and corporate entities alike, have given him the knowledge of market trends, strategic investment opportunities, and relationships into Medical Office advisory. In 2018, John leveraged his more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry to launch a career in commercial real estate – where he now specializes in the confidential connecting of hospitality buyers and sellers to accomplish their strategic and investment goals. This includes but is not limited to new build site selection and acquisition, value add acquisition and asset repurposing, event and restaurant selection and build-out, hotel management consulting, property improvement, and capital expenditures. Outside of the office, John serves on the ECU School of Hospitality Leadership Advisory Board in the College of Business and is a past board member for Uptown Greenville and executive committee member for the Pitt County Convention & Visitor Authority. He enjoys working at The Overton Group, where he draws from the vast experience of his colleagues and has confidence in the firm’s integrity. He enjoys spending time with his family, being out on the water, and traveling in his free time. One of John’s favorite things about Eastern North Carolina is the charm of the many waterways, coastal cities, and towns. John sees economic development potential throughout Eastern North Carolina and is excited to play a part in it.
