Bio
Karen Skelton has over 40 years experience in various aspects of commercial real estate practice. From San Antonio, Texas, Karen graduated from Princeton University in 1979 and began her career by taking over the redevelopment of an historic building in downtown San Antonio. In 1980, she moved to Houston, Texas to join Cadillac Fairview Urban Development (now Prentiss Properties), where she worked on the development of the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences at Houston Center, Westwood Green, The Park and the Gulf Tower. In 1983, she moved to Austin to oversee the construction of a $25 million hotel and office complex in the CBD for Zachry Construction. During this period she also was accepted and completed her MBA from the University of Texas' prestigious Option II program at Austin in 1987. This program is currently ranked 8th worldwide. Subsequently, she joined Texas Commerce Bank (now Chase Morgan) as one of the first bank officers in charge of real estate disposition, with portfolios that ranged as high as $200 million and annual sales of $20MM to $50MM. In 1990, she moved to Bank One (now Chase) to continue with real estate disposition and management activities. In 1992, she formed a consulting company and continued working for Bank One as an outside consultant on real estate disposition in the Northeast as well as running a local real estate brokerage providing disposition services to the FDIC, RTC and banks throughout Texas. Since that time, she has concentrated on fee service brokerage (including a several year stint with Henry S. Miller Commercial Austin, Inc.) as well as investment property sales, real estate consulting and commercial development. She was engaged as the development manager/partner for the new Austin Music Hall, a 44,000 SF music venue in downtown Austin, which was completed in 2008. This role involved using her skills for arranging financing, leasing, entitlement, design development and construction management. She negotiated the purchase and helped lead the entitlement process on a 37 acre tract for a new outdoor concert venue. Karen represents several well known multi-national, institutional owners and developers of real estate as well as 1031 clients and land bank/syndication groups. She is equally happy representing sellers and buyers, improved and unimproved, rehab and new construction, and anything else that can be considered real estate. Karen has been married for 32 years to her husband Hamp Skelton, an attorney she met when they were both undergraduates at Princeton. They have three sons aged 24,23 and 21. .CCIM candidate,Real Estate Council of Austin, ABOR/TAR/NAR. multiple Boards.
