I had the honor of serving the United States of America and her people for nine years while employed with the US Coast Guard. I gained precious skills and expertise in many different areas. I spent time in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, South Carolina, California, Virginia, Louisiana, Alabama, and Michigan.
Now, as I step into the civilian world, I find myself in a whole new world, but not entirely, let me explain…
The military is a branch of government that is comprised of individuals who serve the taxpayers of the United States, defending their freedom and securing them from threats. The military is not a business whose primary goal is to net a profit. In contrast, the professional civilian sector is built on companies who are in business to make money and grow.
The professional realms of the military and the civilian sector are quite different, but they do have one very common thread. The thread is people. Whether an organization is in business to make money, or to serve the taxpayers, it depends on its employees (its people) to carry out the work load and lead that business to success. With that thought in mind, it should always be an organization's top priority to take care of its people. I believe in that philosophy. I make it my goal to find only the best companies to work with, because nothing is more important than how people are treated by their leaders.
Success should not be measured by the amount of money we bring home but, instead, it should be measured by the lives that we change.
