The Hoxton, Chicago Transforms Former Industrial Site into Coworking Hotel
London-based developer Ennismore is expanding its “open-house” lifestyle hotel brand, the Hoxton, in Chicago’s Fulton Market District with 182 rooms, unique gathering spaces, a rooftop pool, and coworking space—all designed around the idea of being a cultural community hub in the Midwest city.
The Hoxton, Chicago follows four other international locations, plus outposts in Brooklyn and Portland, Ore.
The Chicago location will be home to the brand’s first coworking concept for freelancers, small businesses, and travelers, who will be able to use the dedicated work space outfitted with desks, studios, and meeting spaces that span two floors of the building.
Guests of the hotel’s 182 industrial-style rooms can take a dip in the rooftop pool with views of the city skyline, take a class in the wellness studio, or grab dinner and drinks at one of the building’s three eateries. The hotel will also feature a ground floor retail concept with seasonally-evolving brands.
Once the site of a former meat-packing plant, Ennismore Design Studio drew on the site’s industrial past to create the warehouse-style aesthetic for the rooms, which come in three sizes—Snug, Roomy, and Cosy. Unfinished concrete ceilings are paired with two-toned walls in white and rose hues, and complemented with midcentury furniture, locally-curated artwork, dark green or brown leather headboards, brass bed lamps, custom-designed rugs, Marshall radios, and walk-in showers with herringbone tiles to bring warmth to the spaces.
The Hoxton’s rooftop will be home to Cabra Cevicheria, an open-air Peruvian-inspired restaurant with small plates that can also be enjoyed on the pool terrace.
The ground floor offers all-day modern Mediterranean restaurant Cira, and intimate cocktail bar Lazy Bird, where guests can choose from the menu’s 52 drink options while listening to live jazz music.
Every Hoxton location features The Apartment, a meeting and events space located in this outpost's mezzanine overlooking the double-height lobby. The space is made up of five rooms, varying in size, and set around the communal Pantry Kitchen with complimentary refreshments and a retro snacks and candy bar. The hotel will also host rotating cultural events, including art exhibitions in the gallery, talks, workshops, DJ sets, pop-up shops and more. The hotel is committed to promoting local artisans, and partnered with Chicago-based art gallery Johalla Projects to source more than 350 pieces for the space.
